2006 Ultimate Frisbee Tournament:

Battle of the Seasons

Another successful summer of Frisbee comes to a climax with our 3rd Annual Tournament.  Being the 3rd year of tournaments, and having 3 teams taking part, a little theme was added to the team formation to give everybody something to fight for, and should hopefully arrive at somewhat balanced teams.

Everybody was broken into teams based off number of years of playing in our “Areva League”.  So without further ado, the teams

Season 1: The Curse of the Rainbow Shirt (Class of ’04)

From left to right:

Ashley, Blake, Tim 2.0, Chris E./ Shingles, Jeremy/Godzilla, Craig

Who missed out:  Justin

Veterans from the previous two tournaments, have the goal of overcoming the 2nd place finishes of their fearless Captain Tim and his cursed shirt of color.  Missing a player at the last minute didn’t phase these guys.

Season 2: No, We’re not Bitter (Class of ’05)

From left to right:

Jeff A., Jen, Amanda H./Talons, Mark, Jon, Scott

Who missed out:  Wes

Probably the team with the most attitude, out to prove they’re all-stars to the max.  Poor Wes couldn’t get out of training fast enough to support his team.

Season 3: And a Man Up Too (Class of ’06)

From left to right:

T.J., New Jeff, New Amanda, New Chris, Lisa, G.I. Joe, Jon/Super

And the rookies.  For two this was the second week playing with our group and ready to give it all.

The Format:

Cut-throat style, first team to 20 points wins.  What this means, two teams play and a third sits out.  The team scored upon swaps with the one sitting out.  A break is taken when the first team reaches 10.

TJ and Scott flip the Frisbee to determine which team gets to start first.

The Game:

1st Half

This very heated and fast half saw a close match for long while, with a constant 3-way tie up till 5 points.  Season 1 the only leader for the most part, Season 3 goes on to be 1st to 10, ending the half with the following:

Team

Score

Season 1:

7

Season 2:

5

Season 3:

10

2nd Half

After a much needed break, the teams head out to even the score.  You can feel the excitement as Seasons 1 and 2 start to root for each to keep 3 from getting too far ahead.  This half also some pretty close encounters, with a few collisions (Chris/Joe), Frisbee injuries (Scott/Ashley), and some unfortunate and painful cramps during crunch-time (Craig).  In the end Season 3 proved to have a bit too much energy, and a little luck on their side, for 1 and 2 to handle, so they end up with the winning TD…a perfect pass to a closely guarded Lisa in the endzone.  Leaving the final score:

Season 1:

10

Season 2:

14

Season 3:

20

This was an awesome game like usual.  There were many good plays, offensively and defensively on all sides, lots of running and jumping, a little trash talk and excitement all around.

The Prizes:

It seems to be tradition for Tournament prizes to be made the night before, after a run through Wal-Mart, Michael’s and Dollar Stores.  This year is no different.

Lisa, with her clutch plays and winning TD catch, walks away with the amazing Tournament MVP trophy!

[This one is Superman, with the Frisbee Action Grip…not to be confused with our own Supernaw]

No Mark didn’t get the Gatorade dumped on him, which is why he edged out Jeremy for this years Sweatiest Player Award!

[Hard to see but it is a stick of deodorant and a towel]

If you can see past the sweat-shield glare, you might see how Craig was awarded the Crybaby Award for sitting out a round with an injured leg...so wrong…

…which wasn’t helped any by Jen constantly trying to take him down, earning her the Dirtiest Player Award!

[For those interested the movie is Slapshot 2, get the reference?]

He claims he was doing the only thing possible…everyone saw a show-off leap, turn and attempted the no-defense-anywhere-behind-the-back-TD-catch

Either way he missed, cost the team a point and his reward is our humorous Worst Play of the Day Pink Visor Award!

For coming out of nowhere, leaping bounds over defenses and being quick like a rabbit, New Amanda wins the Dollar Store VHS special , Baddest Man of the World Award!

[Featuring the one and only Mr. T in some crap movie.  If you don’t think he’s bad, you’re obviously wrong and need to see Rocky III]

And for winning the tournament, Season 3 walks away with the #1 XL T-Shirts of Champions…XL for a Smurf maybe, but you get what you pay for.

Some Remaining Pictures:

A little warming up

And this is the last you’ll ever see of Jon (far right) who rode off into the sunset after the game.
